I used to live in Shelter Cove (near the bay) & had well water. Some of the neighbors complained about the soil so the town did some testing of the wells and found at least 2 toxic chemicals in them
I believe the chemicals were tetrachloroethylene & 1, 2 trichlor"something". Will see if I still have papers. The neighbors all suspected that the source was the Ciba G pipeline that ran right
by all the houses within 100 ft, but the state blamed it on a dry cleaner that may have dumped in the woods. Some Chem Eng said that the chemicals that they found in the wells were the same ones
that Ciba G. used to clean their tanks in between production runs. Don't know how this finally turned out.
They ended up capping all of our wells & the state spill fund paid for the city water hookups of about 20 houses in the area of Bay ave between linda DR & bermuda dr.
This happened in 1985-86.
I will try to find the articles. You might want to try getting in touch with PBS in NY/NJ as they came down & interview many of us concerning this episode, but I'm not sure if it ever aired.
