contaminated sites in Ocean County208 known
contaminated sites in Ocean County.
I was sent this document, and I am poring over it in an attempt to determine what is pertenent. It
was issued in July of 1994, and I do not know why I do not have a more updated report.
There is a list of sites and the contaminants discovered.
Since I do not know the status of each individual contaminated site and it involves the private
property of individuals who might suffer if the problem was some contaminent that was found in
the tapwater due to old pipes, or if this was a problem that has already been solved,
I will not include the individual addresses. I will list the town, and the number of known
contaminated sites. I have included more information when the land is in public ownership, or
owned by governmental agencies, or associated agencies like NJ Transit.
A. ABOUT THIS REPORT
This first draft of Known Contaminated Sites in New Jersey provides a listing of known sites in
the state where contamination of soil or ground water is confirmed, and where contamination is
either currently undergoing or awaiting remediation. This report replaces the Site Remediation
Program Site Status Report, which was last published in 1992. Both this report and its
predecessor have been produced in response to the requirements of N.J.S.A. 58:10-23.16-.17.
The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) intends to publish this report
on an annual basis and to generate this report on diskette on a quarterly basis. The printed
version will be distributed to the designated State of New Jersey Depositories and county clerks.
Both the annual printed report and the quarterly electronic version will be made available for
purchase through the NJDEP Maps and Publications Sales Office.
This report was prepared by the Site Remediation Program through the integration of several
information sources. Although the Site Remediation Program has carried out a massive
information reconciliation effort, it recognizes that some inaccuracies pertaining to the inclusion
or designation of a particular site may still exist or that more complete information may be
available. Therefore, the Site Remediation Program considers Known Contaminated Sites in
New Jersey to be a dynamic document and invites the public to submit suggested corrections or
any other relevant information -to the NJDEP.
The Appendices of this report contained in Section IV provide forms to be used by readers to
correct or provide additional information regarding sites included in the report. An individual
requesting modifications to the information provided should complete the form entitled "
Supplement/Correction for Individuals Requesting Changes" found in Section IV.B.. It may be
used to provide the Site Remediation Program with more accurate locational information,
additional names the site may be known by, or any other pertinent information that the requester
would like to provide to the NJDEP. Additionally, in an effort to facilitate sharing information with
other public agencies, another form has been included in Section IV.C., entitled "Governmental
Entities Requesting to Share Data". This form will allow other governmental agencies to inform
the Site Remediation Program of the information they maintain and establish the necessary
contacts to initiate the dialogue necessary to share information resources. In both instances,
supporting documentation should be included with the completed form and submitted to the Site
Remediation Program lead/contact bureau indicated in the report. The lead/contact bureau will
consider the information provided'and may make modifications based on the supporting
documentation.
The Known Contaminated Sites in New Jersey includes sites under the purview of the Site
Remediation Program which have contamination present at levels greater than the applicable
cleanup criteria for soil and/or ground water standards. Contamination is normally identified at a
site through sampling of soil, surface water and/or ground water. However, there are instances
where visual inspection has been used to determine the existence of contamination (e.g.,
identification of floating hazardous substance product on water).
Although contamination has been identified at the sites included in this document, the nature and
extent of contamination present, health risks posed, environmental damages, and the associated
remedial priority are not reported. Rather, the details on the nature, extent and severity of the
contamination at a specific site may be obtained from the remedial program leads/contacts
identified in the report. For general information about the Site Remediation Program and/or
identification of sites within a specified area, the Bureau of Community Relations (BCR)
administers the Site Information Program as a public service. BCR can provide radius searches
to prospective home buyers and sellers, real estate agents, legal professionals, lending
institutions, consultants, government agencies and other interested parties concerned about
contaminated sites. Readers interested in such services can contact BCR at (609) 984 - 3081.
The sites appearing in Known Contaminated Sites in New Jersey are classified as either active,
where the site is assigned to a specific remedial program area, or pending, where the site is
awaiting assignment to a specific remedial program area. Sites where a preliminary assessment,
site inspection or the Industrial Site Evaluation review process indicate that no cleanup activities
are required may be granted a "no further action" determination. Sites where a no further action
(NFA) designation has been given are not included in this report unless there are other areas of
identified contamination which have not been remediated.
