I got this e-mail from an individual who, while he wants to help, does not
wish me to include his name or e-mail.
For more info you can contact Jerry Nichols , ( I think that's his name) of
the DEP. He was the one who was in charge of radioactive stuff for them . My
Memory tells me that the accident happened in may ( ? ) of 1961. The old
newspaper archives should be a good resource for more details. I was in the
silo itself and took some pictures some years ago. The govt has put fences
around the site now than were there then. There was concern that the govt
would shut down the A.F. base and leave Ocean Co. with the clean up.
I wouldn't worry about this thing too much as it is a very long term
problem , not something that will concern us in the present too much . The
important thing is that the cap remain intact and prevent the rain water from
carrying the plutonium into the soil and aquifier.
